Overview

This 3 CE beginner level course, designed for social workers, covers evolving terminology, sexualities and gender identities as well as best practices for more open and inclusive spaces. This is an interactive and dynamic workshop for those seeking to better understand how to improve relationships with and better understand the unique concerns facing members of the LGBTQ community. Through the use of interactive technology, group discussions, and lectures, this program covers the strengths and resiliency of the LGBTQ community, evolving terminology, demographics, and best practices for service providers.

About the Instructor

Learning Objectives

1. Define terminology and definitions used among members of the LGBTQ community to describe their experiences.

2. Summarize where the LGBTQ community resides, socioeconomic concerns, and trends in aging as a member of the community.

3. Describe state and federal protections from discrimination, hate crimes, and other concerns facing the community.

4. Recognize the experiences of those who identify as transgender and gender non-conforming.

5. Identify the role of heteronormativity and privilege in working with the LGBTQ community.

6. Explain implications of terms such as heteronormativity, straight privilege, and microaggressions.

7. Apply best practices for intake process, inclusive marketing, and creating “open, inclusive, and responsive” services for members of the LGBTQ community.

1:30 PM Welcome and Introductions

Presenter introductions and instructions for interactive quiz.

1:40 PM Understanding Heteronormativity and Privilege

Identifying how the roles of heteronormativity and privilege influence open, inclusive, and responsive spaces for the LGBTQ community.

2:30 PM Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Knowledge

An overview of emerging terminology regarding trans and gender nonconforming identities.

3:00 PM Snack Break

3:10 PM Your Queer IQ – Interactive Quiz

Your Queer IQ is an interactive quiz utilizing web based technology.

3:50 PM Demographics and Laws

Information regarding where LGBTQ people have the most and least rights under state and federal laws.

4:15 PM Best Practices

Participants will gain knowledge of how to assess their personal and work environments for LGBTQ inclusivity. Resources for further inclusivity exploration will be offered.

4:30-5:00 PM Consultation and Discussion

Participants are encouraged to discuss, with the presenters, ideas, questions, and concerns about LGBTQ inclusivity.

Registration

The cost to attend this event is $120 which includes CE certificate of completion. To register, visit queertalktherapy.com/queerliteracy/welivehere. Registration closes on June 2, 2023. Cancellations must be received prior to the event date to be eligible for a refund.

Course Completion & CE Credit

Course completion requirements: Social workers must attend the entire course and complete a course evaluation to earn CE credit. Certificates of completion will be emailed within 30 business days of course completion.

We Live Here: Building Relationships with the LGBTQ+ Community, Course #4559, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by Queer Literacy as an individual course. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: 11/08/2022 – 11/08/2024. Social workers completing this course receive 3 Cultural Competence continuing education credits.
